42 (2013) Movie review - the true story of baseball’s American Legend Jackie Robinson

Harrison Ford’s newest movie hit a grand slam performance with team player Chadwick Boseman at the box office for “:42”, the movie. According to the movie website Box Office Mojo opening day, '42' ($9,100,000) is on track to become the “best debut ever” for a baseball movie. Even #2 Scary Movie 5 did have half as good ($5,515,000) and third place Evil Dead (2013) ($3,200,000) on opening day.

Branch Rickey's prediction of fallout and discrimination turned out right with not only rivals but even with his own teammates. Robinson became a bull’s-eye target with nasty criticism, physical abuse and constant racial slurs. Even the opposing teams in the Major League threatened strikes. And to make it worse, his own teammates threatened to walk out.
It was an inspiring, riveting movie portraying the true, against all odds story of how Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson broke numerous records. The biggest record was cutting through the racial barriers during the days when restrooms
Brian Helgeland and Harrison Ford
were market “colored” and the entrance to the ballparks showed signs of segregation.
It is a breakthrough real-life drama that stars Chadwick Boseman (The Express”) as Jackie Robinson and one of Oscar® Nominee Harrison Ford (“Witness) best performances as Branch Rickey. If the box office attendance and receipts are any indication, it could set a new weekend showing, too.
In 1947, Rickey placed himself at the forefront of history after signing Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line.  Bombarded with racism from all sides, Robinson pursued his dream with awesome courage and restraint from reacting and ruining his career.

In 1997, Major League Baseball retired his number of “42”, which was the first number in sports to be universally put on the shelf.  Written and Directed by Academy Award® winning Director Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”), the movie was produced by Thomas Tull, Dick Cook, Jon Jashni (The Hangover(2009)) and Jason Clark, Ted (2012).  Co-producers included Jillian Zaks (Pacific Rim, July 2013) and Darryl Pryor (Lethal Weapon 4, 1998).
The main cast gave a stellar performance and included: Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Andrew Holland, Lucas Black, Hamish Linklater and Ryan Merriman.
After watching film that opened nationwide Friday, April 12, 2013 and hearing movie goers cheer on Robinson’s victories throughout, this film timing is perfect. It carefully traced how blacks in this country struggled to overcome racism.
The White House held a screening for high school and college students of the Jackie Robinson biopic “42″ earlier this month (April 3, 2013), which was hosted by first lady, Michelle Obama.
Harrison Ford talks to the media about the "42".
Harrison Ford describes it as, “A real pleasure and great experience, because we were able give them a lot of written materials on the movie and Robinson’s history,” he said on Premiere night in Hollywood.  “It’s very important to remind the young people not just about a bit history, or reading about it,  but more about what it felt like to be a victim of racism at that time.”
Asked about Chadwick Boseman’s star role in the movie as Jackie Robinson he said, “Chadwick was great. He worked so hard to learn the skills of a baseball player and studied the life of Jackie Robinson.
This could be a homerun at the Oscars next year, too. It has been already nominated for the Golden Trailer Awards For “Best Drama” (AV Squad, and Warner Bros. Pictures) for "Trailer 2" and “Best Drama Poster” for (Refinery, The and Warner Bros. Pictures).
This is a great movie to take the whole family to learn history and enjoy the true legacy of Jackie Robinson. Two thumbs up!

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball.
Star Chadwick Boseman
(Jackie Robinson)
In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

In 1997, Major League Baseball retired the number 42 for all teams, making it the first number in sports to be universally retired. The only exception is April 15th—Jackie Robinson Day—commemorating the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. On that day alone, players from every team proudly wear Number 42 to honor the man who altered the course of history. For more about the movie visit: www.42movie.com.

Be sure to check The Hollywood Film Journal Cover Story of Chadwick Boseman and exclusive interview on how he felt playing the role of baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

Finders Keepers, The Root of All Evil - Two Thumbs Up for a thrill a minute

Released this month on cable and IVOD Platforms
This story first appeared on Examiner.com
Some of the best movies ever made were produced either on a shoestring budget or practically no budget. But rarely do you find a good horror film, where the producer, who not only works with practically no budget to make a film, but also takes a calculated risk with actors with no acting experience.Meet Actor/Producer Timothy Woodward Jr., who migrated to Hollywood about a year ago from Wilmington, NC to find his dream.
This month , Finders Keepers, The Root of All Evil has been released nationally and Online. Woodward was still editing when this writer caught up with him two weeks ago. The trailer he just edited was pretty scary. Woodward is a mile a minute in projects and in aspirations. You could almost get an adrenaline rush just listening to him describe how he made the movie and how it will be distributed.

The movie is scary, chilling, quite realistic and is suspenseful. This story features a band of losers and shifts their criminal acts into the chaotic lives of a group of 20 something year olds, who are innocently celebrating a birthday. The one to watch in this movie is “Chuck” (Richard Bachellor), who Woodward said, “showed up on set the first day of filming and refused to leave until he was given a part.”
The award winning actor/director has teamed and signed a multi picture deal with Gravitas Ventures, a video on demand distributor which has a content distribution agreement with Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.
The full length thriller film was released this week (April 4th) ) nationwide on scores of cable and IVOD Platforms. According to Woodward, “the movie will be available to more than 100 million holes in the US and in Canada.”
By learning how to shoot, edit, act and pitch his own projects he’s come a long way. His successful Hollywood East teen soap landed him a multi-year deal with HULU.com, world’s largest content provider Online. Before that it was Whittaker Bay, which Reveille International, signed a three year deal for domestic rights. Reveille was later merged with Shine Americas.
Filming of Finders Keepers:
Timothy Woodward Jr. with
Lauren de Normandie
What also makes this project highly unusual is the fact that Woodward “deliberately picked raw talent or actors with very little acting experience.” He admits, “it was a gamble, but a calculated one, which paid off.”
Most of the film was done in the woods giving it the appeal and atmosphere of movie with a bigger budget. The artwork and official trailer for Finders Keepers: The Root of all Evil is now up on IMDB and is getting a lot of attention.
Woodward also noted that, Bachellor was cast almost by accident and put out one of the most powerful performances of the film with his natural raw talent. “He wouldn’t leave the set unless I gave him a shot at the role,” explained Woodward Jr. “He has more drama off stage then on set and really exploded when we cast in the roll of ‘Chuck,’” Woodward said.
Woodward has exceeded all expectations in this non-stop chilling/thriller film, Finders Keepers, The Root of All Evil.
Bill Oberst Jr
The quality of shooting, editing and acting are unbelievable for a low or in this case no budget film. It is “R” rated and not recommend for teen under 18.
Taking a chapter from actor/director,  Ben Affleck’s book, Woodward directs the film, but slips into the acting role like Affleck would. The 90+ minute full length feature is written by Pia Cook and Todd Gordon. Cook and Woodward have become quite a pair, working together on several films including “Blackout” starring Timothy Woodward Jr. and Emmy award winning actor Bill Oberst Jr. One of the huge projects in the works is the much anticipated first installment of the new modern day Dracula trilogy.
Finders Keepers: The Root of All Evil is TWO THUMBS UP.
